A recent study indicates that patients who stop using new slimming jabs like semaglutide or tirzepatide tend to recover shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt conventional diet and exercise regimens.
Findings released in a prominent medical journal demonstrates that while obese individuals can lose a large proportion of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.
"Users purchasing such treatments need to be cognizant of the potential of fast weight regain when the treatment concludes," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of recovery implies a return to pre-treatment mass in about 18 months.
Comparing Therapies
The analysis, which looked at 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.
Researchers point out that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone generally have a less rapid weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
Explaining the Quick Rebound
Nutrition scientists believe the mode of action of the jabs explains the heightened rebound.
The injections mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.
"Long-term administration of the hormone levels several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and may also reduce responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.
"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement results in appetite is uncontrolled, making binge eating far more likely."
A Lifelong Issue?
Medical guidelines advise the injections for people with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.
Professionals say that, due to the high risk of weight regain, the treatment should be considered life-long.
This perspective is echoed by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "emphasize the persistent character of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like hypertension.
Patient Experiences
People who have discontinued the jabs describe a sudden return of appetite.
"It felt as if a trigger that goes on and you're instantly starving," described one woman.
This difficulty is exacerbated if patients have not adopted permanent lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.
Widespread Use
Survey data show that millions of people in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with interest being substantial.
- Use is higher among women compared to males.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest usage rates.
- Many access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Finally, clinicians stress that while GLP-1 drugs are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone cure and long-term success likely depends on integrated behavioural support.
